Tower Silicone Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Tower Silicone different from Tower's acrylic sealants?

Tower Silicone is a 100% silicone rubber, acetoxy-cure sealant — not an acrylic. That means it's not paintable, it handles a much wider service temperature range (-40°F to 400°F versus roughly -35°F to 180°F for Tower's acrylic products), and it's rated safe for incidental food contact once cured, which most of Tower's acrylic caulks explicitly are not.

Can Tower Silicone be painted over?

No — it's not intended for areas that will be painted. If you need a paintable bead, use one of Tower's acrylic or siliconized-acrylic sealants instead.

Is Tower Silicone safe for food contact areas?

Yes. Once cured and washed, it complies with FDA Regulation No. 21 CFR 177.2600.2 for incidental food contact.

Do I need to use a primer with Tower Silicone?

Generally no — it has primerless adhesion to most materials, including glass, tile, ceramics, enamel, and varnished or painted wood. The exception is cement substrates, where a primer should be used.

How long does Tower Silicone take to cure?

Tooling time is about 15 minutes and it's tack-free in about 60 minutes. Allow 24 hours for full cure. It won't cure in totally confined spaces, since it needs exposure to atmospheric moisture to set.

What temperature can Tower Silicone be applied in?

Apply when surface and air temperature are above -35°F and rising, with air no hotter than 95°F and substrate no hotter than 140°F. Once cured, it holds up across a -40°F to 400°F service temperature range.

What substrates does Tower Silicone work on?

Masonry, cement board, wood, concrete, galvanized metal, aluminum, glass, and vinyl siding.

Can Tower Silicone be used in areas that will be submerged in water?

No — it's not intended for areas that will be submerged in water.

What warranty does Tower Silicone come with?

A 60-year guarantee. If the product cracks, peels, or separates within 60 years of installation after proper storage and application, Tower Sealants will replace it when the purchaser returns proof of purchase.

Technical Data Sheet

Tower Silicone

All Purpose 100% Silicone Rubber Sealant

Description

Tower Silicone All Purpose 100% Silicone Rubber Sealant is an all-purpose, acetoxy cure sealant, ideal for tough indoor or outdoor waterproof applications. It cures at room temperature under the action of atmospheric moisture to give a permanently flexible silicone rubber. Tower Silicone exhibits excellent primerless adhesion to most materials and can be used for sanitary application (use primer on cement substrates). It's commonly used on glass, tiles, ceramics, enamel, glazed tiles, and varnished or painted wood, and some plastics. It forms a flexible, durable, airtight, water resistant seal offering exceptional protection. Once cured, the bead is mildew resistant. Tower Silicone is safe for UV exposure and will not discolor.

Surface Preparation

Prepare a clean, dry surface which is free of loose debris, dust, dirt, soap, oil, or grease. Remove old caulk from the surface. Protect areas not to be sealed — or when using the sealant to form weather-stripping — by placing wax paper over the sealant to prevent it sticking to the mating piece until it has cured. Only apply sealant when surface and air temperatures are above -35°F and rising. Do not apply to surfaces that exceed 140°F, or when rain is expected.

Not intended for areas that will be painted or submerged in water.

Application

  1. Cut nozzle at a 45° angle. Cured bead should be between 1/8″ and 1/2″ wide.
  2. Puncture the inner foil seal.
  3. Smooth bead with a finishing tool, if necessary.
  4. Clean up excess uncured sealant from surface and tools with mineral spirits.
  5. Allow 24 hours for sealant to cure. Sealant will not cure in totally confined spaces.
  6. Reseal for reuse.
  7. Excess cured sealant must be cut or scraped away. Wash hands with soap and water.

Coverage: 55 linear feet with a 3/16″ bead. When cured and washed, the product meets the requirements of FDA Regulation No. 21 CFR 177.2600.2.

Clean-Up

Immediately after use, clean uncured product and equipment with mineral spirits. Remove cured sealant by cutting with a sharp-edged tool. Remove thin films by abrading.

Safety

During cure, acetic acid is released and vapors should not be inhaled — good ventilation is required. Irritating to skin, eyes and respiratory tract. Harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. May cause allergic skin reactions and/or central nervous system depression. Adverse reproduction effects have been reported in animals. May cause adverse kidney effects. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Use in a well ventilated area. Wear eye, skin, and respiratory protection. Eye contact: immediately flush with water for 15 minutes and get medical attention immediately. If swallowed: do not induce vomiting; give large quantities of water and get medical attention. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. For health information, refer to the Safety Data Sheet or call ChemTrec at 800-424-9300. Keep out of reach of children.

⚠ Cancer and Reproductive Harm — go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov for additional information.

First Aid

In case of skin contact, wash off quickly with plenty of soap and water and remove contaminated clothing. For eye contact, flush eyes immediately with large quantities of water for at least 15 minutes. If swallowed, obtain medical treatment immediately — do not induce vomiting. If inhalation causes physical discomfort, move to fresh air; if discomfort persists or any breathing difficulty occurs, seek medical help.
